The most relevant sites for 9/11 news: relevance rewarded

Posted August 2, 2004.

Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how), based on our analysis of Google News.

Here we rank the sites we think are the most relevant for 9/11 news.

Three sites with close links to New York have done particularly well, offering evidence that Google News listings (and Newsknife ratings based on them) provide reliable pointers to the best sites for individual news topics (like 9/11 news).

To create the rating Newsknife analyzed 22 news items at Google News related to the 9/11 Independent Commission since late March.

Google News usually lists seven news sites on its home page as sources for each major news item, plus 30 sites on each of several sub-pages, all "sorted by relevance".

We ranked the 142 news sites we found on the home page and first sub-page of listings at Google News for the 9/11 news items. We figure that the majority of viewers don't go below these two pages of listings.

We awarded each site points per appearance, on a sliding scale from first to thirty-seventh position.

Our Top 12 from the 142 sites, ranked in order are…

1  The New York Times
            3    1    3    4    1    2    1   33
2  The Washington Post
            4    0    3    1    0    0    1   19
3  Newsday
            3    1    1    0    0    3    0   19
4 Reuters
5 USA Today
6 CNN
7 International Herald Tribune, France
8 Guardian Unlimited, UK
9 Voice of America
10 Xinhua, China
11 CBS News
12 The Christian Science Monitor

The number of appearances are shown above for our top three ranked sites. For example, over the 22 news items Newsknife recorded, The New York Times appeared on the Google News home page three times as the number one source through to once as the seventh-ranked source, and 33 times on the first sub-page of listings we recorded.

The strong showing by The New York Times is hardly surprising. The number three position for Newsday and number seven position for International Herald Tribune are interesting though. These are their highest ever relevance rankings at Newsknife.

All three sites have New York connections. Newsday proudly affirms its New York location. French-based International Herald Tribune has connections to The New York Times.

Reason suggests that New York-related news sites would likely put superb effort into 9/11 news items. Google News appears to pick this up.

It is evidence of the strength and specificity of Google News' claim that its listings are "sorted by relevance", delivering a superior news service. Well done!

Newsknife relevance rankings are based on Google News, so we're pleased to see this as an affirmation of the accuracy of our measurement of individual news site performance over time.
