A. how Newsknife rates news sites
Newsknife usually monitors the main Google
News U.S. site daily.
We note the individual news sites that Google News links to as sources
for its news items.
The listings for each story are “sorted by relevance” by Google
News. The most relevant sources are listed at the top for news fans'
convenience, just like a standard search engine result.
Newsknife notes the relevance position of each news site listing
on the home page and first subpage. We award points on a sliding
scale to give you a very good picture of how each news site is doing
over time compared with its rivals. This is the same method we use
for rating journalists.
For example, if a news site has a listing that is ranked 50th by
Google News for a particular story, we give them one point. If the
site has a listing that Google News ranked first for another story
we give them 50 points for that. We then rank all the sites on their
total points.
B. how Newsknife rates journalists
Note: Google News appears to be moving towards showing journalist
bylines based on journalists' Google+ profiles. More
at the Google blog.
Newsknife intends during 2012 to take account of this new system.
Our current journalist ratings are for the year through October
2011.
On its English language sites, Google News gives the names of the
journalists involved in many of the listed news items. The one or
two names per item are shown after the name of the news site that
published it.
Newsknife rates journalists based on this information. To do this
we monitor the 22 regional English language versions of Google News
shown at left, usually every business day. We monitor the home page
and the first subpage for each news item.
Newsknife rates the journalists on two factors: the ranked position
- “sorted by relevance” by Google - of each of their listings at
the Google News sites (and within the sections, e.g. U.S. Business)
and the quantity of their listings we found there.
For example, if a journalist is named in a listing that was ranked
50th by Google News for a particular story, we give him or her one
point. If they are named in a listing that Google News ranked first
for another story we give them 50 points for that. We then rank
the journalists on their total points.
We believe that Newsknife's ratings give a guide to the ability
and specialized expertise of individual journalists.
To begin with, if a news site names a journalist it suggests they
are proud of this person's ability. If that person is named frequently
in listings that rank highly at Google News this suggestion of ability
is reinforced.
If the journalist ranks highly in a specific section of Google
News like "Business" it suggests that they are a particularly
good person to follow for news in that category.
We stress that Newsknife journalist and news site rankings are
our own, not Google's. They are based on our judgment and our analysis
of the listings we recorded when monitoring Google News.
