Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of Google
News.
Our current ranking is the first in a series of US Election Specials.
This current ranking shows you the sites we think are the most
relevant so far for news related to John Kerry's Presidential campaign.
We're gathering data for a similar rating about President Bush. And we expect to release Countdown
Specials as the election gets closer and the atmosphere gets hotter.

Method and results
To create the rating Newsknife analyzed 42 news items (see below) at Google News related to John Kerry
since the start of 2004.
Google News usually lists seven news sites on its home page as sources for each major news item,
plus 30 sites on each of several sub-pages, all "sorted by relevance".
We ranked the 194 news sites we found either on the home page or the first sub-page of listings at
Google News for the John Kerry news items. We figure that the majority of viewers don't go below these
two pages of listings.
We awarded each site points per appearance, on a sliding scale from first to thirty-seventh position.

The number of appearances are shown above for our top three ranked sites. For example, over
the 42 news items Newsknife recorded, Reuters appeared on the Google News home page three times as the
number one source through to twice as the seventh-ranked source, and 59 times on the first sub-page of
listings we recorded.
San Francisco Chronicle, The Mercury News, Bloomberg and The Miami Herald are newcomers to Newsknife's
Top 12. This suggests that they are well worth investigating for superior, relevant John Kerry coverage.
