Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 224,177 individual site
listings by 3651 sites for 1656 news items during 2007

The effect of the wire services on Google News after 2 months
Since August 31, 2007, Google News has included these major wire
services amongst its news sources: UK Press Association, Associated
Press, Canadian Press and Agence France-Presse.
Newsknife has been watching, and after two months the data we have
collected suggests three outcomes...
1. The Associated Press has become a major player (and not surprisingly
looks likely to be the only wire service to do so at the US Google
News site).
2. The other major sites are continuing to perform well.
3. Perhaps therefore, the wire services are benefiting at the expense
of the other small news sites.
The following lists support our conclusions.
The first list shows the number of appearances found by Newsknife
on the home page of Google News for 5 major sites during August.
This is just before the wire services started running at Google
News.

The next list shows Newsknife's top 6-ranked sites found on the
home page of Google News for September and October combined. We
found New York Times there 82 times during September and 57 times
during October; 139 times in all. You can see that compared with
August, the monthly figures for the 5 sites in the first list have
not been badly affected by the presence of Associated Press.

This final list shows the sites that Newsknife found most often
on the Google News home page during September-October, as a percentage
of their total appearances found by us at Google News during that
time. For example, of the total number of Reuters appearances we
found, 19% were on the home page.
For any site, having a high percentage of its appearances on the
home page is a sign of quality. Notice that there are no wire services
in this Top 6 ranking.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 18 and 217 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 45 and 292 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
Last month we found New York Post 35 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 19 times as the
second source, through to 6 times as the 7th source. The full lists

To get maximum traffic to your news site from Google News you need
to get as many as possible of your listings onto their home page.
Newsknife monitors listings on Google News home page and 10 sub-pages
deep.
