Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 199,892 individual site
listings by 3370 sites for 1456 news items during 2007

Newsknife "Wire Services Watch"
- the first month's ratings
Since August 31, 2007, Google News has included major wire services
amongst its news sources. "Google
News to Host Wire Service Stories" PCWorld
They are the UK Press Association, Associated Press, Canadian Press
and Agence France-Presse.
Newsknife has been watching. Here are the high points of what we
found during September, the first full month.

You can see in our standard ratings, below, if and where the above
appearances ranked them amongst the top sites.
In Newsknife's opinion Associated Press is the only wire service
so far to take a significant share of traffic away from the other
major news sites that appear on the home page of the US version
of Google News.
At 31 appearances out of the 234 appearances we found by our top
6 ranked sites, it took a 13+% share.
Surprisingly, our second-ranked wire service is the French AFP.
Why not the geographically closer Canadian Press? We've looked at
their news items and can't see an obvious clue.
The big winner since the addition of the wire services appears
to be Guardian Unlimited, UK.
Check out their rocketing rankings, below. Nice for them. But why?
Maybe it's early days yet. Newsknife's "Wire Services Watch"
will continue to monitor the situation. Watch along with us.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 29 and 219 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 67 and 285 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

Last month we found New York Post 22 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 5 times as the
second source, through to 3 times as the 7th source. The full lists

to get as many as possible of your listings onto their home page.
Newsknife monitors listings on Google News home page and 10 sub-pages
deep.
