based on our analysis of the main Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 178,027 individual site
listings by 3170 sites for 1281 news items during 2007

From August 31, 2007, Google News has started including the major
wire services amongst its listings of news sources. And they're
hiding listings by news sites that have simply duplicated the wire
service stories, (you can click to see the listings "with duplicates
included").
The wire services concerned are the Press Association, Associated
Press, Canadian Press and Agence France-Presse.

For Google News fans this is good news. It places original reporting
higher in the listings and it removes clutter.
But news sites that have largely been running wire reports could
see their traffic from Google News dive.
Newsknife will be tracking the ratings rise and fall for individual
news sites over the next few months (including the wire services).
We'll show you those that appear to be winners or losers.
In the meantime check our standard monthly ratings below. They'll
be our benchmark for the old order. Shall we ever see their like
again?

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 24 and 208 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 82 and 269 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

Last month we found New York Post 13 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 8 times as the
second source, through to 5 times as the 7th source. The full lists

Newsknife monitors listings on Google News home page and 10 sub-pages
deep.
