based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

The following are from our sample of 239,407 listings by 5781 sites
for 1533 news items during 2008

TV & radio sites 2008-to-date at Google News
At Newsknife we're always surprised by the sheer number of TV and
radio station-related news sites that appear at Google News.
More than 200 of the 800+ sites Newsknife has found on the home
page of Google News year to date, have belonged to or are related
to TV and radio operators.
Mind you, many of them don't rate very high, and it has been suggested
that some have web sites because everyone these days has to have
a web site.
We show here the top 20 of the 200+ sites. See the full ranked
list in the Newsknife
Members' Area. The list shows the number of appearances
per site that Newsknife found on the home page of Google News as
source 1 to 7 for major news items.
Year-to-date we found BBC 54 times as the first source for a news
item, 37 times as the second source, through to 45 times as the
7th source.
This TV\Radio rating is extracted from our rating of all types
of news sites. BBC News ranked 8th overall.

Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
