Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

The following are from our sample of 116,004 listings by 5115 sites
for 2342 news items during 2010.
Featured rating:
Top journalists in Google News sections worldwide
On their English language sites, Google News gives the names of
the journalists involved in many of the listed news items. The one
or two names per item are shown after the name of the news site
that published it.
Newsknife is now rating journalists based on this information.
To do this we are monitoring the 22 regional versions of Google
News shown at left.
This month in the Newsknife
Members' Area we have ranked lists of thousands of journalists
Newsknife has found in the individual topic sections of these 22
Google News sites.
For instance you can see a detailed ranked list of 226 journalists
we found in the Health section of Google News Zimbabwe. (We ranked
June
Torbati top there.)
Or 415 journalists from the Entertainment section of Google News
US. (We ranked Josh
Wigler top there.)
For each journalist we show their last two Google News listings
we found in that region section. You can usually link to the original
news item.
Newsknife rates journalists on two factors: the ranked position
of each of their listings for news items in the particular Google
News regional sections when we visited, and the quantity of their
listings we found there.
Here, for example, we show our top 6 of the 301 journalists that
Newsknife has rated for appearances in Google News US Sci/Tech section.
You can see all our regional section ratings right now in the Newsknife
Members' Area.
We found 12 listings for Cecilia Kang, our top-ranked journalist
for US Sci/Tech. For example, as shown here, we found her in two
listings by Washington Post in Google News US Sci/Tech section on
June 10 and 27. At the time we visited, these Washington Post items
were ranked 16th and 25th by Google News amongst the listings for
those particular stories.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 17 and 43 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 101 and 144 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

you'll find a master subpage that usefully gathers listings into
groups. This table shows the number of appearances per site that
Newsknife found on master subpages last month as a source for major
news items.
We found Los Angeles Times 33 times as the first source there through
to 30 times as the 6th source. In total we found them 274 times
on master subpages. The full list of 947 sites is in the Newsknife

deep.
