Newsknife rates news sites and journalists (how)
based on our analysis of Google News. We monitor news sites on the
main US-oriented Google News
site and journalists on 22 English language Google News sites worldwide.

Top sources for the Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are their "Top Stories".
And dominating these are at least two news sites listed as the top sources. This is the best exposure a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full list of 44 sites is in the Newsknife Members'
Area.

No. 1 sources
Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full list of 140 sites is in the
Newsknife Members' Area.

Home page sources
This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 3 for major
news items.
Last month we found Washington Post 70 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item through to 63 times
as the 3rd source. The full list of 359 sites is in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

that usefully gathers listings into groups.
This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on master subpages last month as a source for major news items.
We found Washington Post 56 times as the first source there through
to 28 times as the 6th source. In total we found them 262 times

Our current journalist ratings are for the year through October
2011.
The following are from our sample of 946,289 listings attributed
to 69,722 journalists since late 2009.
Top overall - October
This Newsknife rating is based on the ranked positions and quantity
of listings attributed to each journalist we found worldwide in
the 22 Google News sites listed at left.
Rania El Gamal tops our list, being attributed in 187 listings
found there by Newsknife.
