based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

The following are from our sample of 311,757 listings by 7473 sites
for 2780 news items during 2009.

Google News loves
Rupert Murdoch
Fascinating. At a time when "Murdoch
could block Google searches entirely", three Rupert Murdoch
media properties (Times Online, Wall Street Journal and FOX
News) have performed superbly at Google News.
That's our assessment because as a group they've come second in
Newsknife's Top News Sites of 2009. And they've improved their individual
rankings since last year.
It isn't easy to rank as a Newsknife Top Site. We base it on the
number of times we found the particular site listed as the first
source for a major news item at Google News this year. (How
Newsknife rates news sites.)
We monitor Google News virtually every day, ranking sites based
on hundreds of thousands of listings.
It looks like Google News is finding Murdoch news sites more
relevant and Murdoch news sites are getting increased traffic
via Google News. On the surface, a dream situation.
Newsknife rated Associated Press as our Top News Site of 2009 because
we found them 350 times as the first source for a major news item
at Google News this year.

Associated Press swept all of Newsknife's major ratings for 2009,
as you can see in our standard ratings further down this page.
Newsknife recently
analyzed the trend for news site appearances at Google News.
Our figures indicate that 20 major news sites, especially Associated
Press, appear to be increasing their share of the total appearances
on Google News home page.
This seems to be at the expense of smaller and less well-known
news sites.
Of course, AP is not strictly a retail news site. Google hosts
its appearances at Google News. It is, more accurately, a Top 12
news source.
Newsknife has been rating news sites for 8 years. Over that time
we've found over 11,000
news sites at Google News. And the number keeps growing.
Google News continues to be a great destination for news quality
and diversity.

Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
