based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

The following are from our sample of 314,226 listings by 6912 sites
for 2144 news items during 2008.

Newsknife found news item listings by 6912 sites at Google News
during 2008. New York Times was our top performer.
We found New York Times 296 times as the first source for a major
news item at Google News this year compared with 168 times last
year. This suggests that Google News is rating New York Times higher
for quality this year. And it makes New York Times Newsknife's Top
News Site of the year for the second year in a row.

The above result notwithstanding, Associated Press swept most of
Newsknife's major ratings for 2008, as you can see in our standard
ratings further down this page.
Newsknife has analyzed
the effect of AP's first year at Google News. Our figures
indicate that AP's stellar performance at Google News may be at
the expense of smaller news sites.
Of course, AP is not strictly a retail news site. Google hosts
its appearances at Google News. It is, more accurately, a Top 12
news source.
Other changes in Newsknife's Top 12 this year include the arrival
of BBC News and FOX News, the reappearance of VOA and Christian
Science Monitor after their 2007 absence, and ABC News' move down
from 5th to 11th place.
Newsknife has been rating news sites for 7 years. Over that time
we've found over 9000
news sites at Google News. And the number keeps growing.
Google News continues to be a great destination for news quality
and diversity.

their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.

Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 48 and 127 sites
