based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 247,541 individual site
listings by 3809 sites for 1832 news items during 2007

Top News Sites of 2007
Newsknife found New York Times 168 times as the top source for
a major news item at Google News during 2007. This makes it our
Top News Site of the year.

Any change in our Top 12 compared with previous years, is subtle
and perhaps temporary. There appears to be a trend towards US-based
sites, which figures for the main Google News site with its US audience.
Perhaps coincidentally, Newsknife found appearances by only 3800
sites this year compared with 4500 in 2006. It may be the luck of
when we monitored, or it may be that Google News is refining its
portfolio of news sources.
ABC News has moved down in our rankings this year. Houston Chronicle
and Los Angeles Times debut. Guardian Unlimited just slipped out
of the Top 12.
The Associated Press wire service also debuts in our Top 12. Items
from AP have been appearing at Google News since the start of September.
Newsknife has found AP as the top news item source 11 times over
the 3 months to date. We've multiplied that by four to simulate
a full year.
Of course, AP is not strictly a retail news site. Google hosts
its appearances at Google News. It is, more accurately, a Top 12
news source.

Associated Press winning the numbers game
One of Newsknife's standard monthly ratings ranks news sites based
on the appearances we found by them on the home page and up to 10
pages deep at Google News. It is a good indicator of which news
sites are winning on sheer number of appearances at Google News.
Compare our rankings for November 2006 and 2007. Guardian Unlimited
has almost always topped this rating over the years. But the wire
services, Associated Press and AFP, appear to have dealt it a blow.
In fact only two of last November's Top 6 were there this November.

Of course, this is only the ranking for a single month, but it
looks like Associated Press could be taking up the position of greatest
volume supplier of news items to Google News.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 15 and 212 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 42 and 295 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

Last month we found Reuters 26 times on the home page of Google
News as the first source for a news item, 22 times as the second
source, through to 3 times as the 7th source. The full lists of
