ABC News has swept
the field with the most appearances as the No.1 source for individual
news items at Google News, the most appearances on Google News home
page and the most appearances overall.
Newsknife has been rating news sites for four years. The big news
is that we've recently sharpened our focus (how).

These ratings are based on our sample of 261,237 individual site
listings at Google News by 3518 sites for 1486 news items since
December 2004.
Top News Sites of 2005
Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranking positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full detailed list of 246 sites
is in the Newsknife Members' Area.
For example, we found ABC News 102 times as the No.1 source during
2005. It was also our most frequently found site of the year; we
found it 9041 times at Google News during 2005.

These tables show the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
During 2005 we found ABC News 102 times on the home page of Google
News as the first source for a news item, 75 times as the second
source, through to 40 times as the 7th source. The full list of

Most appearances on Google News home page as % of site total
It's nice to appear on the home page of Google News but it doesn't
give the full picture of how well your news site is performing.
This table shows appearances that Newsknife found at Google News
during November. It shows the % and number we found on the home
page and the combined total for the home and 10 sub-pages.
Six of the 21 appearances we found for Muslim American Society
during November were on the Google News home page. That's a hefty
28.57%. The topics of the six appearances were the French riots,
the CIA, and immigration.

Column 1 shows appearances that Newsknife found on Google News
home page year-to-date pre-November. Column 2 is appearances found
during November. And column 3 is the percentage increase for November.

We searched for a clue to the increase for Monsters and Critics.
There was nothing clear except that 9 of their 10 home page items
had international topics: France, Iran, Iraq, Israel, China.
Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 26 and 90 sites are in the Newsknife

Opportunities
A major resource for any news site is its appearances on the first
sub-page of listings for any news item. Perhaps with a little improvement
your site might reach the Google News home page more often.
Newsknife did not find these sites on Google News home page this
month but as shown we noted them in positions 1-5 on the first sub-page.
