These ratings are based on our sample of 133,424 listings by 2793
sites for 872 news items year to date 2007.

Top headlines at Google News during May 2007
Subscribers to the Newsknife Members'
Area can view in-depth profiles of thousands of news sites,
based on their performance at Google News.
Included in the profiles are the tens of thousands of headlines
we find at Google News most months. Subscribers can see which items
ranked well or not. Then in most cases they can click to the original
news item to try to figure what Google News likes.
The headlines below are the first for our new regular public feature
"Top Headlines at Google News". To select them, first
we took the sites we found most often during May as No.1 source
for the first story on the home page of Google News. Then, to select
the Top 6 headlines, we chose a No.1-ranked headline for a major
story from each of those sites.
The listings below show the time and day when we found the headline
at Google News. You can click through to most of the original items.

Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 79 and 215 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

Last month we found New York Post 16 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 8 times as the
