Featured rating:
previewing Newsknife's rating of top journalists
During 2009, on their English language sites, Google News started
giving the names of the journalists involved in many of the listed
news items. The one or two names per item are shown after the name
of the news site that published it.
Newsknife is developing a new rating of journalists based on this
information. This month in the Newsknife Members'
Area we have a ranked list of 1000 journalists gathered
from our monitoring. This is a preview, a small part of the journalist
ratings Newsknife will launch soon.
Newsknife's rating of journalists is influenced by three factors:
the ranked position of each of their listings at Google News, the
quantity of their listings, and how often their news items are repeated
across the Google News regional sites we monitor, (see the list
at left).
For example, if a journalist was named in a listing that was ranked
50th by Google News for a particular story, we would give him or
her one point. If they were named for a listing that Google News
ranked first for another story we would give them 50 points for
that.
If that listing was repeated on a dozen regional versions of Google
News it would provide a dozen chances for the journalist to earn
points towards their Newsknife ranking.
We believe that Newsknife's ratings give a guide to the ability
and specialised expertise of individual journalists.
To begin with, if a news site names a journalist it suggests they
are proud of this person's ability. If that person is named frequently
in listings that rank highly at Google News this suggestion of ability
is reinforced.
If the journalist ranks highly in a specific section of Google
News like "Business" it suggests that they are a particularly
good person to follow for news in that category.
The journalist names attributed by individual news sites are obviously
up to the sites themselves. Some names may be open to debate but
overall we have found them to be reasonable.
Here we show the top 12 of the 1000 journalist rating you will
find right now in the Newsknife Members' Area. We found Mu Xuequan
listed 914 times over 21 regional versions of Google News, (see
the full regional names at left), in sections like Top Stories and
World.
You can see that although we found David Lightman 322 times and
Elizabeth Benjamin 297 times, we ranked Elizabeth Benjamin
higher. This would have been because we had found her more often
named at news item listings that were ranked higher by Google News.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 19 and 36 sites are in the Newsknife

No. 1 sources
Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 54 and 88 sites
