Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of Google
News.
We monitored 91 election-related news items at Google News this
year. From these we produced three news site ratings: sites highly
relevant for news on George
Bush, John Kerry
and the Presidential Debates.
(Click to see the individual news items listed on those pages.)
Here we bring our three ratings together - with a difference.
The original ratings were for appearances by news sites on the
home page and first sub-page of listings at Google News. This retrospective
rating covers all appearances on the home page and 10 sub-pages
of listings for each news item at Google News.
It's the big one: our ranking of news sites that had high-ranking
AND sheer numbers of election-related listings at Google News.
We ranked 17,210 site listings
Google News usually lists seven news sites on its home page for
each major news item, plus around 30 on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance".
Newsknife noted this sort order and awarded points to each site
per appearance on a sliding scale: 307 for being the first listed
site for a news item through to one for last on the tenth sub-page.
We did a little tweaking and added up the score for each site,
giving the site a ranking based on quality and quantity of appearances
compared with other sites.
In all we amassed 17,210 individual listings at Google News by
903 news sites.
And what an interesting performance various news sites delivered
when covering the elections. Several consistently exceeding their
relevance ratings for general news.
It's impractical to show the results per site on this page layout.
Here is a sample chart.
