Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how), based on our analysis of Google News.

We've analyzed 91 election-related Google News stories and certain sites stand out...

* The Miami Herald - because it was at the heart of the action last election and has jumped to 6th in our Bush ratings.
* CNN - for TV-centric news like interviews. It jumped to 6th for our first presidential debate.
* Reuters and Washington Post - because they've rated consistently highly for all election topics.
* The Mercury News, CA - because it leapt from 25th place in our general news ratings to 5th for Kerry and 3rd for the debates.
* Blog site Daily Kos - because election blogging is hot and it vaulted from 546th to 99th place.

Method and results

To create the George Bush rating Newsknife analyzed 28 news items (see below) at Google News since the start of 2004.

Google News usually lists seven news sites on its home page as sources for each major news item, plus 30 sites on each of several sub-pages, all "sorted by relevance".

We ranked the 162 news sites we found either on the home page or the first sub-page of listings at Google News for the George Bush news items.

We awarded each site points per appearance, on a sliding scale from first to thirty-seventh position.
