Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

The following are from our sample of 348,548 listings by 7147 sites
for 2414 news items during 2008.

Strong newcomers during 2008
Here are the top 12 sites found by Newsknife at Google News for
the first time during 2008. You can see the full list of 3164 newly-found
sites in the Newsknife Members'
Area.
The sites are ranked by volume found at Google News on the home
page and 10 sub-pages deep. The columns of the list are rank, home
page appearances and total appearances.
For example, we sighted NECN at Google News 804 times, including
36 times on Google News home page.
Sites we found earlier in the year will have an advantage in volume
found. It may not be substantial though. We first sighted istockAnalyst.com
in May.

We admit to being astounded by the sheer number of sites Newsknife
found for the first time at Google News during 2008.
We started 2008 with around 6000 sites on our list and ended with
over 9000 sites, an extraordinary 50% increase.
A quick analysis doesn't reveal any obvious trend to the new sites.
We found many of them only on the sub-pages of Google News listings,
suggesting that they are minor sites. Many are US-based sites. It
may be that the increase is simply indicative of the unremitting
roll-out of the internet as the major medium for broadcasting information.
It may also be that during 2008 Google refined its techniques to
become even more proficient at locating and classifying web information.
One thing is clear from our figures. Google News is more than ever
a great place to go if you want a variety of views on news events.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 51 and 130 sites

This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
Last month we found Associated Press 31 times on the home page
of Google News as the first source for a news item, 24 times as
the second source, through to 16 times as the 7th source. The full
