based on our analysis of the main US-oriented Google
News site.

The following are from our sample of 176,373 listings by 5082 sites
for 1083 news items during 2008.
Featured rating:
Local, hyperlocal, suburban, sub-news sites and organizations
at Google News
Newsknife has found an increasing number of very localized news
sites at Google News, albeit mostly in its sub-pages.
Many local news sites belong to groups, local or traditional like
Hearst Corporation. Sometimes the local sites don't have a separate
address and\or drift as sub-sites within the group address. It can
be difficult for readers (and Newsknife) to assess such sites.
We chose our Top 6 to show the diversity of ownership. Five of
the Top 6 are groups.
Within that context the ranking of our Top 6 is based roughly on
the number of appearances Newsknife has found at Google News year-to-date
by each group's sites.

Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 43 and 97 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.
