Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 77,056 listings by 2260
sites for 548 news items year to date 2007.
Featured rating:
Top US states as news sources, and their top state-level news sites
US news sites listed at Google News usually (but not always) have
their home state mentioned too; for example New York Daily News,
NY. Major "national" news sites like New York Times are
exceptions to this practice.
This lets us see which states are most often represented in Google
News listings and which sites are found most for those top states.
Below are the 6 states that Newsknife found most often on the home
page of Google News during January - March this year.
The figure after each state name is the number of sites we found
from that state there. Next is the site we found most often from
that state. Next are the number of times we found that site as the
first source for a Google News story, and the number of times we
found it overall.

For example, for the year to date, Newsknife has found 14 Texan
news sites on Google News home page. The Texan site we found most
often was Houston Chronicle; a blistering 118 times in fact, 26
of which were as the first source for a Google News story.
Despite this bravura Lone Star performance, we found more Californian
sites on Google News home page than Texan by a margin of 36 to 14.

JURIST's Paper Chase's rating is based on a strong showing in January.
Each listing below shows its listed position for the particular
Google News story, the date found and the headline. For example
on January 22 Paper Chase was the first listed source for a Google
News item about the president and pro-life issues.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 34 and 190 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 87 and 157 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
Last month we found New York Post 14 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 8 times as the
second source, through to 2 times as the 7th source. The full lists

deep.
