Newsknife special rating: news site performance trends at Google News over the last 12 months

Newsknife monitors news site appearances at Google News, not just on its home page but 10 sub-pages
deep for each news item. To produce this Newsknife trend list for the last 12 months, first for each site for
each month we noted the % of the total appearances we found that were on the Google News home page.

Next we averaged those monthly % in two groups: July 2005 - February 2006, and March - May 2006.
Then we compared these averaged % to see whether the site had trended up or down in the last 3 months.

For example, during July 2005 for the TIME site, 14.29% of the appearances Newsknife found at
Google News were on the home page. Through July 2005 - February 2006 an average 11.22% of TIME appearances
we found at Google News were on the home page. Through March - May 2006, an average 21.71% of our findings were
on the home page: an upwards trend of around 10% during this latter period.

Because this report uses % it should not be used to compare sites. The underlying figures vary considerably
between sites. We have chosen the 151 sites in the chart as an interesting selection from the 4000+ sites
Newsknife has found to date at Google News. This report is produced by Newsknife, not Google.
It is based on analysis by Newsknife of listings noted when we monitored Google News.
