Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 280,276 individual site
listings at Google News by 3805 sites for 896 news items during
year to date 2006.

Top sites just below the home
page at Google News during May
A news site that appears on the home page of Google News will get
more click-through traffic than one that appears on the sub-pages
of listings for individual news items.
It follows then that a major resource for a news site is its appearances
on the first sub-page of listings for any news item. Perhaps with
a little improvement that site might reach the Google News home
page more often.
Newsknife did not find the following sites (full list in Newsknife
Members' Area)
on Google News home page during May but we did find them ranked
within the top five places on the first sub-page.
For three of them, we show below those May sub-page appearances
along with April appearances that successfully made the Google News
home page. (Ranked positions 1-7 are on the home page.)
You can click through to the individual articles to see if you
can figure why some made the home page and some not quite. (In our
Members' Area you can do this for thousands of articles at thousands
of news sites.)
Most of the sites in the full list of those we didn't find on the
home page are non-US based. That's proper for the Google News US
site.
On the other hand, Advertiser, Australia ranked first over US sites
for an Iran news item.
We can't see why some of the Sydney Morning Herald articles made
the home page and some didn't. They look similar.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 25 and 117 sites are in the Newsknife
Members' Area.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 117 and 317 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
Last month we found Bloomberg 5 times on the home page of Google
News as the first source for a news item, 9 times as the second
source, through to 1 times as the 7th source. The full lists of
330 and 1233 sites are in the Newsknife Members' Area.
Last month ABC News swept all Newsknife's major ratings. Bloomberg
have knocked them off our home page rating top spot during May.

To get maximum traffic to your news site from Google News you need
to get as many as possible of your listings onto their home page.
Newsknife monitors listings on Google News home page and 10 sub-pages
deep.
