Google News from search engine Google is in its own words "a news
service compiled solely by computer algorithms without human intervention".
Wow!
What advantage does this offer you? Being clever isn't a consumer
benefit. Being better is.
The Google News site shows news headlines and some text, drawn
from a large number of reputable sources. Newsknife's instinctive
reaction on trying it is “This is news truly cut loose from its
sources. The news is the star not the publishers.” Try for yourself.
Decide whether you prefer being news-centric or publisher-centric.
Here’s where Newsknife thinks the benefits lie…
Why change to Google News?
A better overview of the news. It’s easy to click to several
sources of a story – including some you’ve never tried.
The most up-to-date news more often. Your favorite news site
can’t always be first with a story. Google News likely includes
whichever site is first.
Lists the time each story was sourced. More sites should
do this. In a news emergency you want to know who’s got the latest.
Easy-to-read briefs on the home page. Google News makes greater
use of brief paragraphs than many sites. Good if you’re in a hurry.
Possibly the fastest loading major news site, probably because
Google News has no adverts (yet).
Why stay with your favorite news site?
A proven source of superior reporting. Save time. Go straight
to the news site you know does a good job.
Breaks its own news first. If your favorite news site is
a news reporting originator (like CNN) you’re going to get their
stories there first (but Google News may have links to them soon
after).
Instant videos, audios, photo galleries and interactive.
All there on the site home page. No need to burrow down for them.
Local news, views and advertising. News from international
sites doesn’t have that familiar flavor.
Instant access to the other goodies that site offers. For
example, visit Yahoo! News home page and click straight through
to their cornucopia of services.
