based on our analysis of the main Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 38774 individual site
listings at Google News by 3795 sites for 202 news items during
January 2006.
Featured rating: the increasing visibility of Forbes, Times Online
and Monsters and Critics
If you're a regular visitor to Google News you'll certainly get
diversity. Previously lower-ranked news sites suddenly appear frequently
as top-ranked sources alongside familiar favorites.
Take Forbes and Monsters
and Critics as examples. They're up there in almost all
the ratings on this page. But we show you in these charts and in
the ratings below, that they were near invisible to us 8 months
ago.

is a regular near the top of our ratings but is now inching higher.
Newsknife rates the main Google News site, which is aimed mainly
at US news fans. Three of our top six sites this month are based
in the UK. That's diversity.
Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full list of 22 sites is in the Newsknife Members'
Area.

No. 1 sources
Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full list of 59 sites is in the
Newsknife Members' Area.

A year ago we ranked Forbes 397th as a "No.1 source",
six months ago 105th. We ranked Times Online 23rd and 20th.
Home page sources
This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
During January 2006 we found ABC News 20 times on the home page
of Google News as the first source for a news item, 8 times as the
second source, through to 8 times as the 7th source. The full list

To get maximum traffic to your news site from Google News you need
to get as many as possible of your listings onto their home page.
Newsknife monitors listings on Google News home page and 10 sub-pages
deep.

Muslim American Society continues to do well. The number of appearances
Newsknife finds for Local6.com fluctuates. They had a strong showing
July-October 2005 and are moving up again now.
