Newsknife rates news sites on relevance (how),
based on our analysis of the main Google
News site.

These ratings are based on our sample of 474,922 individual listings
at Google News by 4635 sites for 1976 news items during 2006, and
50,021 listings by 1960 sites for 339 news items year to date 2007.

Newsknife updates its Google
Algorithm Watch every few months to see if we can spot any
broad shift in the ranking of several news sites. This might indicate
that Google has changed the algorithm it uses to rank news sites.
And that you should study the newly elevated sites to see if you
can learn something to apply to your site.
If you look at our updated Google
Algorithm Watch you'll see our figures stretch back to August
2004. This is interesting in its own right. However, for each site
we also calculated a median rating for August 2004 - August 2006,
and another for the most recent 6 months, September 2006 - February
2007.
A group of 79 sites showed significant changes in the last 6 months
compared with the previous two years. Our Top 12 shown below, are
detailed in the Google
Algorithm Watch chart. The full chart is in the Newsknife

Has there been an algorithm change that news site owners should
consider? We think a minor one occurred around September 2006. This
is indicated by a cluster of sites suddenly appearing in our algorithm
analysis starting September (most strikingly seen in the Members'
Area version of our Algorithm Watch chart). MVI

Engine Roundtable suggest that as at late February - March
2007 there may be a significant "Presidents Day" Google algorithm
change under way. Newsknife will watch this.

Top sources for the 2 Top Stories
Dominating the Google News home page when you first view it are
their two "Top Stories". And dominating these are the
two news sites listed as their first sources. This is the best exposure
a news site could aim for.
The columns in the lists below are ranking, appearances noted by
Newsknife as No.1 source in the first Top Story, and the second
Top Story. The full lists of 26 and 180 sites are in the Newsknife

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 66 and 115 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

This table shows the number of appearances per site that Newsknife
found on the home page of Google News as source 1 to 7 for major
news items.
Last month we found Washington Post 13 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 4 times as the
second source, through to 4 times as the 7th source. The full lists

to get as many as possible of your listings onto their home page.
Newsknife monitors listings on Google News home page and 10 sub-pages
deep.
