These ratings are based on our sample of 156,846
individual site listings by 2920 sites for 1048 news items during
2007

The impact of humans on the environment is the big story so far
for 2007. Or is it? Of the 1048 news items we've recorded at Google
News to the end of June 2007, only 37 have been clearly related
to the environment. Even then, we've had to include news of local
items like storms.
Nevertheless, Google News captured strong stories on major issues
like CO2 emissions. We show here the six sites Newsknife found most
often as the first source for an environment news item. You can
see all 31 sites and 37 headlines now in the Newsknife
Members' Area

- the location of the news item on the Google
News home page,
(T1-2=Top Stories, W1-3=World, L1-3=local US).
- the ranked position (1-7) on the home page.
- the approx. time in New York when we saw it.

a news site could aim for.

Google News usually lists seven news sites per major news item
on their home page and thirty on each sub-page, all "sorted
by relevance". We award each site points per appearance on
a sliding scale (with occasional tweaking) to get the ranked positions.
The second column is the number of appearances we recorded as the
first source for a news item. The full lists of 81 and 236 sites
are in the Newsknife Members' Area.

Last month we found New York Post 11 times on the home page of
Google News as the first source for a news item, 7 times as the
second source, through to 3 times as the 7th source. The full lists
